What do you think might be the discrepancy between 2.0 and 2.2? Does 2.2 just serve requests faster?

503 means Service Unavailable

That doesn't mean your proxy can't take the load, it means your
back-end can't take the load.

Consider running multiple back-ends with mod_proxy_balancer.
