You could ask dev@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if anyone might be interested in
backporting that to 2.2.x.  

But first you should describe the problem you're trying to solve.  Maybe
there's a better solution.  (Or have I missed some previous discussion
about it?  This looks like a new thread though.)
