Maybe I don't understand what you mean.

I have tested using ...

==========================
<VirtualHost *:80>

DocumentRoot /tmp/example/
ServerName www.example.com



</VirtualHost>

==========================

I can access to both http://example.com and http://example.com/

So I found no problem by using DocumentRoot /tmp/example/ (with the
ending slash)

Any adivce?
