Hello,

I downloaded apache without ssl and now realize that I need to configure ssl. Do I need to download the apache with OpenSSL and reconfigure my installation or is there a way to add OpenSSL to my existing apache install?

No you didn't download apache without ssl - unless you got a really
old version, or some third-party compile.

If mod_ssl.so isn't in your modules directory, RTFN apxs for
how to build it.
