Why does apache-status show so many OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0?

Just curious about this - its RH 7 / Apache 2.2.8.
Right now theres 26 of these, and their SS values range from 0 to 89682. I did install nagios recently, and it is testing some of the sites for uptime, but can't remember if these OPTIONS entries were there before or not. The hostname is the localhost. And why HTTP 1.0, not 1.1 ? Thanks.
