What OS are you implementing on, and what version did you download?

i need a walk through or something of the sort to show me how to download apache.  I'm so lost.  I downloaded the two .gz files, but they will not open and i do not have any idea where to go from there.  I am downloading apache so i can use a web program called joomla and it is required.  any help, oh please please please someone?
