as long as apache was originally a HTTP server, it should be no surprise.

Yes, currently apache can do some proxying (even FTP) and can support other
protocols, but the focus is imho stiill on providing data via HTTP, so for
your needs you just have to search for something different than apache.

If Joshua says something about apache, it's for 99.9% true.

For searching of a multiprotocol proxy server, use google please.
