What Apache Version are you running? Did you apply the changes recursively?
chmod -R ?

The folder contents are displayed when apache cannot find an index.html file in that directory (BTW, you can turn that off by disabling the option Indexes in httpd.conf).

You can tell Apache to look for certain files with the DirectoryIndex keyword. Make sure that index.html is defined for the DirectoryIndex keyword. For Apache 2.2 the file you want to look at is apache2/mods- available/dir.conf. For earlier versions probably httpd.conf.
