mod_proxy: is it possible to remove/unset X-Forwarded-For header

I'm using mod_proxy to proxy requests to an application which does not respond properly when mod_proxy adds the X-Forwarded-For header.  I'd like to remove the header from the proxied request, but my attempts to do so using mod_headers have failed.  This might indicate that the addition of the X-Forwarded-For header by mod_proxy occurs after any operations on the proxied request by mod_headers.  The problem occurs in both Apache 2.2.0 and 2.2.8.

Can anyone suggest an alternative way to remove the X-Forwarded-For header?

Regards,
Callum.
