1st possibility: Your site has become more popular, so it gets more hits (maybe search engines have noticed your site).

2nd possibility: Your site has evolved between 1.3 and 2.2 and pages now have more GIFs, JS, CSS etc. so more hits to load a page.

3rd possibility: Your LogFormat is different between 1.2 and 2.2 and you are logging more data per hit.

Get a log analyser and see what's really happening (and save typing all that awk stuff...)
