Thanks for the reply. 

I forgot to mention that the path to expat is in the expanded apache
source tree. 
"--with-expat=/home/snow/dstusynski/solarisSparc/apache226/httpd-2.2.6/s
rclib/apr-util/xml/expat" 

<apache_src_zip>/srclib/apr-util/xml/expat. Will it not compile if
pointed to itself, is that a mistaken assumption on my part? 

I'll give the build a go explicitly specifying builtin.

You are telling it to look at an /external/ expat, so it's not going to
any effort at all to help you get that built, and can't find the
finalized headers.  Did you mean --with-expat=builtin perhaps?
