Something is messed up. To find out what, you need to get a core dump file and generate a backtrace. See: http://httpd.apache.org/dev/debugging.html#crashes (By the way, it is unlikely that the problem is something that comes "out (of) the box" with the Apache HTTP Server from http://httpd.apache.org.
