Hi Tony,

Thanks for the response. I have confirmed with some clients that some pdfs that were not working are again working.

Just fyi. the lines below can be rewritten as:

SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.(?:gif|jpe?g|png|pdf|PDF|zip|mp3)$ no-gzip dont-vary

(not that it matters),

Grant,
I don't know why, but I can confirm that it does break pdf's I have had to exclude them, I have had this issue since I started with Apache (2.0.54)
I do this

SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$ no-gzip dont-vary
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.pdf$ no-gzip dont-vary
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.zip$ no-gzip dont-vary
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.mp3$ no-gzip dont-vary

If anyone knows a way to fix, I would like to know also.

Hi again all,

I was reading about deflating only text content since jpgs etc are already compressed.

My deflate_log looks as thus:

defiant# tail -f deflate_log
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)
"GET / HTTP/1.0" -/- (-%)

Here are the relevent lines from httpd.conf

# SetOutputFilter DEFLATE
# DeflateCompressionLevel 1
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain
DeflateFilterNote Input input_info
DeflateFilterNote Output output_info
DeflateFilterNote Ratio ratio_info
LogFormat '"%r" %{output_info}n/%{input_info}n (%{ratio_info}n%%)' deflate
CustomLog /var/log/deflate_log deflate

SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$ no-gzip dont-vary
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.(?:exe|t?gz|zip|gz2|sit|rar)$ no-gzip dont-vary

Any ideas why the logs appear broken?

-Grant

Subject: [users@httpd] Mod Deflate and PDF

Hi all,

It seems mod deflate may be causing some older versions of windows (98, 2000) to cracsh when pdf's are accessed.

Does any one know of this and any patches/workarounds that might help?

I am running FreeBSD 6.2 and apache 2.2.3.

Mime types pehaps?

-Grant
