mod_auth_ldap search/bind

I need to set up Apache to use LDAP authentication but the search/bind method that mod_auth_ldap uses is problematic. Because mod_auth_ldap searches LDAP for a matching entry before attempting to bind, I am forced to either place a password in the .htaccess file or provide anonymous access to LDAP. Neither of these is particularly appealing. I would rather that mod_auth_ldap skip the search phase and just attempt to bind and allow or deny access based on whether the bind was successful.

Is there any way to accomplish this with mod_auth_ldap? If so, how? If not, is there any other way of doing this?

Thanks,
Dan.
