This question has been asked all over the internet, but I have yet to find an answer. I want a literal question mark in my substitution: RewriteRule ^user/([^/\.]+)/\?([^/\.]+)\=([^/\.]+)$ /index.php?user= $1&$2=$3 [R] Backslashing it does not work. Trying to capture it with a .* fails.
Read the RewriteRule docs with particular attention to the box labeled "Query String". There you will see that you need to use something like RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^([^/\.]+)\=([^/\.]+)$ RewriteRule ^user/([^/\.]+)/$ /index.php?user=$1&$2=%1 Use the RewriteLog to debug.
