many thanks for this hint. As 1.3.27 is the last version of 1.x
available for Solaris 8 via sunfreeware I tried a 2.0 version from
sunfreeware and indeed there is an extra waitpid() call after sending
SIGTERM, so the 3s delays did not occur with this version.
