this variable remains undefined causing failed compiles:

the variable's emptyness is not correctly tested causing the two | to apear separated only by 2 spaces.

Does anyone know what this variable is supposed to do, and where to patch the built in configure script?

cc is gcc 3.4.6
kernel is sunos 2.5.8 "solaris 8"
sed has been pre-empted with nbsed, as the same problem occured with gsed, while a netbsd 4 machine using (nb)sed compiled cleanly from pkgsrc.
