As Scott rightly says, it is impossible to modify or control the pop-up
box that the browser generates in response to a 401.

Nevertheless, you're probably wondering how some sites manage to log you
in via a "normal" form page? They do this by checking the credentials by
some other means (ie, *not* Basic Auth) and then issuing a cookie for
the session. These methods require additional server-sided programming
(CGI, PHP, ASP, Cocoon etc.)
