Nope, it's still you who missed the point. The variables available to mod_rewrite are different than those availble to mod_setenvif. I've never tried with mod_setenvif, but mod_rewrite certainly can access QUERY_STRING and can do anything that mod_setenvif can do, as Krist demonstrated.
