I got so fed up with having to search through the file included from httpd.conf that I wrote myself a little utility to generate a composite httpd.conf file containing all of the included files.  I was quite amazed at how much extra stuff was being configured in my apache!

Whoops, sorry about all that.  I stupidly forgot to search other
configuration files for this directive.  It was set in another
confiiguration file.  Changing the directive in the other place as
well made everything work.  Thanks!
