OpenLDAP now supports SSL (ldaps) so I would encourage you to use it in conjunction with OpenSSL. You should build the latest OpenLDAP version (2.23 or something) and you can disable all the server side daemon stuff (--disable-slapd --disable-slurpd) and just build the libs and includes.
