i saw a similar thread here today, and as well i have also been reading:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/misc/rewriteguide.html
but i cannot understand how to achieve what i would like.

i have just changed my domain from example.com to example.org. i have all my
other sites and services changed over, but i would like any remaining links
that people might have saves to re-write as well (such as,
www.example.com/~userdir to www.example.org/~userdir). both example.com and
example.org are configured as seperate virtual hosts in my httpd.conf.

speaking of seperate virtual hosts, i also would like to figure out how to
re-write anything arriving at the base url for example.com, but i would have
to assume that an answer to mny first query would take care of this as well.
i tried doing a 'Redirect permanent' against the /, apache didnt like that.

cheers, and thanks a bunch,
jonathan
