I think Matt suspects you've put a URI-path here rather than a filesystem path so start there. If that doesn't fix it, post back an unadulterated config or, if you must, replace the paths with symbols that make sense, eg: replace /home/matthew/www/html with /dir1/dir2/dir3/html instead of just /blah, which we can't tell what it's supposed to mean...
