This is a server variable that, AFAIK, is available only in mod_rewrite.

Actually, I'm not sure if your original idea is sound. First of all, it is only convention that links port 443 to HTTPS - technically, there is no problem in using 443 for plain HTTP and/or using HTTPS on port 80 (or any other port). So your rule wouldn't be general.

Secondly, HTTPS has to be handled by a dedicated VH - which can't be used for HTTP. So your test, if you put it in the HTTPS VH, would *always* return "true" and so would be pointless. To put it another way, how do you know you've received an HTTPS request? Answer: Because you landed in the HTTPS VH.

If this doesn't solve your problem, post back explaining exactly what you're trying to achieve...

PS - returning to mod_rewrite, there is a server variable called "HTTPS" that is either "on" or "off". You might try looking at that... http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewritecond
