I didn't indicate anything special for this with apache. My configuration line was:

./configure --enable-so --enable-rewrite --disable-autoindex --enable- ssl --with-ssl=/usr/local/ssl

I DID a fresh compile of php4 and php5.

Both give me the same crash.  No difference.

I'm starting to think that the problem might be with the Apache
installation.

Are you compiling Apache with mpm=prefork? PHP is *not* threadsafe (or
rather, it's probably *not* threadsafe unless proven otherwise).

  -spc (I know that older versions of PHP are not threadsafe ... )
