Hi,

Using windows:
Start > Run... > cmd (enter)
and then follow steps bellow:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>tracert www.planet.nl

Tracing route to netapp.planettechnologies.nl [213.75.12.14]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

   1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  SpeedTouch.lan [10.0.0.138]
   2    21 ms     6 ms     5 ms  195.190.250.28
   3     7 ms    18 ms     7 ms  iawxsrt-dc2-bb21a.wxs.nl [213.75.1.165]
   4     8 ms     8 ms     8 ms  content54.wxs.nl [213.75.12.14]

Trace complete.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>

On *nix systems:

21:52:50[root@mp3bre root]# traceroute www.xs4all.nl
traceroute to www.xs4all.nl (194.109.6.92), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
  1  80.86.177.1 (80.86.177.1)  0.578 ms  0.484 ms  0.452 ms
  2  DUS-2-pos130.de.lambdanet.net (217.71.105.49)  0.687 ms  5.955 ms
0.683 ms
  3  AMS-2-pos200.nl.lambdanet.net (82.197.128.30)  3.721 ms  3.778 ms
3.715 ms
  4  ams-ix.sara.xs4all.net (195.69.144.48)  4.218 ms  4.306 ms  14.250 ms
  5  0.so-6-0-0.xr2.d12.xs4all.net (194.109.5.5)  4.336 ms  4.379 ms
4.362 ms
  6  ab1.d12.xs4all.net (194.109.10.71)  4.444 ms  4.512 ms  4.471 ms
21:52:57[root@mp3bre root]#

What it shows is route users go through to reach your server. The higher
number, the slower connection is. The longer 'distance' they travel -
more risk for bottle-necks. As you can see on the *nix traceroute I did,
first 2 network components are on the same network as mine server and
therefore really fast (under 0,5 ms). When I get 'out' of the network,
things slow down a bit... Basicly, everything within 20-25 ms is
reasonably good. Any higher then that and download 'jams' :(

Cheers,
Aleks
