Thankyou for your comments Nick. I will look into the 
modules you mentioned below.

This may not be relevant, but I note in the php manual,
php4 and php5 support the concept of handlers.

Is this in any way related to filters Nick?

AddHandler php-script php
AddType text/html php

# PHP 5
AddHandler php5-script php
AddType text/html php
