Hi Dave.

Did you compile apache first, then compile php5 as a shared 
module, using apxs. Something like this:

my-host/php-5.0.4/#

# config.nice contents:

'./configure' \
'--with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2-0-55/bin/apxs' \
'--prefix=/usr/local/php5-1-2' \
'--with-mysql=shared,/downloads/mysql/mysql-max-5.0.18-linux-i686-glibc23/'
'--with-mysql-sock=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' \

Are you using the php5 module you compiled, and not an older 
version? If so is it readable by apache httpd.conf?
