Thanks Steven and Keith.

There were 2 problems. crontab in my fedora setup had "root" inserted
after the time params and the fedora version of cron took that as a
command.

Then my second problem was that my editor for some silly reason
thought they were windoze files rather than unix...

All happy now. :)
