  My apologies, I didn't notice that gmail was sending in HTML.

  No, they are stored on a local disk.

  A multitude of applications, all coded in Perl.

  Absolutely nothing that (to me) would indicate a connection.  In the
error log, we get the standard errors about missing files, occasional
warnings from programs, but nothing that would seem to be related to
the problem, and the same for the script log.

  I would be more than happy to provide any more information that
could be relevant, I'm just not sure what to include - as I can't find
any indication of why this is happening.
