You think wrong.

This is not a webserver issue. It is fundamental feature of HTTPS. To implement HTTPS, the browser and server must establish an encrypted channel *before* the request is sent. So the server cannot learn the hostname until the channel is established. But since the hostname defines the VH (and hence the certificate), the server can never know which VH to use.

There are plans to extend HTTPS to send the hostname in a preamble but this needs to be supported by browsers - it might happen one day...
