Have you tried XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/index.html)? Integration of Apache and many other open source tools, such as PHP and MySQL.

FYI.  There are alternative web servers availabel for people who have problems running Apache on their computers.  I was able to setup QnE to run PHP in 5 minutes.  But, setup instructions are hard to find: Go to Help then click on Frequently Asked Questions.
