Having difficulty with the ssl.conf file as well: 
Redirecting https://pan.eci.mgn-us.net to
https://staging.esalton.com

I have tried the following in my research...
Added the following lines to ssl.conf:

<VirtualHost *:443>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond   %{SERVER_PORT}  !^443$
RewriteRule ^/$ https://staging.esalton.com/ [L,R]
</VirtualHost>

I also tried:
<VirtuaHost _default_:443>
ServerName pan.eci.mgn-us.net
ServerAlias staging.esalton.com
Redirect permanent / https://staging.esalton.com/
...
...
<\VirtualHost>

This does not work as well

Help is appreciated.
