Jody,Check to make sure that the username which apache is running under has read access for the /home, /home/cleveland & /home/cleveland/password directories. If you're apache is running as 'nobody' then you'll probably need 744 on the directory files themselves. The other possibility is that you'll need the execute bit set as well - 755. hth

Hello, I've got a site I'm trying to protect with a .htaccess file. In the .htaccess file, I've got this: AuthUserFile /home/cleveland/passwords/.htpasswd AuthGroupFile /dev/null AuthName "phpMyAdmin for Mystique" AuthType Basic <Limit GET> require valid-user </Limit> With this as permissions: -rwxr--r-- 1 cleveland apache 164 Aug 19 11:28 .htaccess I created a .htpasswd file in the directory /home/cleveland/passwords with this as permissions: -rwxr--r-- 1 cleveland apache 24 Aug 19 11:27 .htpasswd When I go to that directory that's protected, I do get a password box, but it won't accept my name and password. In my error_log, there's this: [error] [client 172.30.2.145] (13)Permission denied: Could not open password file: /home/cleveland/passwords/.htpasswd Any ideas what may be wrong? I thought both files had the right permissions. I even tried chmod'ing both files to 777 and it didn't work. -- Jody Cleveland Computer Support Specialist cleveland@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------------------- The official User-To-User support forum of the Apache HTTP Server Project.
