Err... because that's how many bytes the executable takes up. There's the apache core plus any modules you have compiled in. As Jon suggests, you can cut out any modules you don't need and also strip the binary to remove any compiled in lib functions. But at the end of all that, apache is a fairly complicated program and it takes some space to contain it all.

Why are you worried about it? As a rough guide, give about a third of your memory to apache, so:

MaxClients = (machine_memory / 3) / httpd_footprint

so if you have 512 MB in your machine and a 5MB footprint, MaxClients should be 30-35.

If this isn't enough to serve your site then you don't have a big enough machine for the traffic - you can't run a bus service with a VW Golf.
