[users@httpd] Serious memory leakage problem (Windows 2000, Apache/2.0.54)

Dear list,

we are seeing this memory leakage problem on our site (Windows 2000, Apache/2.0.54), and I'm stumped as to what might be causing it. Here's a screenshot of taskmgr:

As you can see, it uses more and more memory, eventually crashes and restarts, and then climbs up again.

I have posted about this before; at the time I was told that the problem was probably with the PHP scripts I was using. Until today, I believed that, because I re-wrote the entire website from scratch and that made the problem go away. But now, all of a sudden, the same problem occurs again, and I can't think of anything I could possibly have done that could have triggered this. The only thing I did this morning was to update one of the PHP files, but it turned out the problem was already in progress before I even attempted to run it.

The error logs contains periodical repetitions of:

[Mon Jul 18 11:52:34 2005] [notice] Apache/2.0.54 (Win32) PHP/4.3.10 configured -- resuming normal operations
[Mon Jul 18 11:52:34 2005] [notice] Server built: Apr 16 2005 14:25:31
[Mon Jul 18 11:52:34 2005] [notice] Parent: Created child process 2516
[Mon Jul 18 11:52:34 2005] [notice] Child 2516: Child process is running
[Mon Jul 18 11:52:34 2005] [notice] Child 2516: Acquired the start mutex.
[Mon Jul 18 11:52:34 2005] [notice] Child 2516: Starting 64 worker threads.
[Mon Jul 18 11:55:06 2005] [notice] Parent: child process exited with status 3221225477 -- Restarting.

Obviously, the first six lines are normal messages from server start-up, while the seventh is the actual error. Googling for this error didn't return anything useful.

Is this a known problem? Is there a workaround? Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.
Arne Heizmann
