I think the problem I had was because I installed MySQL-server-5.0.7-0.i386.rpm and MySQL-client-5.0.7-0.i386.rpm, which are binary installations. I'll do source installation MySQL-5.0.7-0.glibc23.src.rpm now to see if it solves the problem.
