My question was badly crafted, apologies... Let me try again with an example: If I have 50 web sites, each a cluster of 10 physical machines with a web server on each. Now, I want to place Apache in front of these 50 sites (web server clusters) as a reverse proxy. What I am trying to figure out is roughly how many physical machines I might need to host an Apache web server for each cluster? Would 2 physical machines (clustered) handle the throughput for a cluster of 10 web servers? Is there a 'wet string' guideline to the number of web servers (serving a single site) that can be handled by a single Apache 2 proxy? It is possible that I have just not understood... Apache simply takes incoming requests from the client and re-issues them to whatever proxy is defined in the config rules for the given request... Reading between the lines, I suspect you are harbouring a misconception about how HTTP operates. It is not a connection-based protocol - it is connectionless and stateless. So your question is not like "how many phone calls can a switchboard handle?", it is more like "how many addresses can the post office deliver to?"
