Er - I am a web admin on a busy commercial site. We too are plagued by bots who ignore robots.txt and make repeated requests to dynamic pages. It's a constant struggle to keep ahead of them. We use a variety of strategies (honeytraps, user agent, cookies, behavioural heuristics). If you want to broaden the discussion to swap ideas, that's fine but I have to go now - I have to calculate how many angels you can get on the head of a pin...
