Hello,
Is there a way to have .htaccess verify username and password from a mysql
database? If not is there a way to password protect a directory with php.
The reason I ask is that I would like if a user changes their password via
php that when the users accesses the directory they could use the password
they changed to.

If you check out http://modules.apache.org and run a quick search for 'sql', you'll find several solutions that will suit your needs.

However, most of these solutions are a bit dated, as people are moving towards a more "friendly" approach which include a complete PHP/ASP/whatever-based front-end that takes care of all of this, as integrated into part of a content management system or some such.

Hope that helps
