Never use expressions like "it fails" or "doesn't work" - describe exactly what happens (timeout, 404, 401, computer explodes...) and cut'n'paste error_log messages and browser messages (though not IE "friendly" messages).

As was already mentioned, the most likely explanation is that you do not have a "Listen 555" directive telling apache to listen to that port number.
