This doesn't sound like a problem you are going to have much luck
solving on this mailing list.  It is way too complicated with way too
many variables involved.  Just reading and understanding your
description would probably be a good 30 minutes work.  So your best
bet might be to hire a good consultant.

Two wild guesses:

- Try playing with the SSLMutex directive.

- Try attaching to a spinning process with gdb and get a backtrace to
see what it is really doing.
