I will try these things on Monday when I get back to the office. Didn't think to try it from init 3. This is the first time I'm installing Apache on this machine, everything else went fairly smooth. Especially since this is my first Debian install. Thanks for the assist...

Hi,
I am trying to install Apache on a Debian 3.0 system. I am using "apt-get install apache". Every time I do this, the machine totally locks up and is unresponsive. This includes trying to close X or shift to a different virtual server. The machine is completely locked. The last commands displayed are:
LoadModule apache_ssl_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libssl.so
# LoadModule allowdev_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_allowdev.so
# LoadModule eaccess_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_eaccess.so
# LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so
# LoadModule roaming_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_roaming.so
Pondering.
I am stuck, as I am new to installing Apache, and have no idea where to look to troubleshoot this. Thanks for any assistance.

I'm not quite familiar with those last commands displayed, they look like items that should be in httpd.conf.

Try booting to init 3, and installing that way - no X, no sound, no anything, just pure, sexy, command-line time, baby. This will just help you rule out any possibility of something conflicting with the install while it's running.

Have you ever encountered this problem before on this machine? Does /var/log/messages say anything neat?

Thanks
