Thanks guys, apparently it was the user/group thingy. I've created a user and group apache and now it is working. Thanks.

That's weird... apachectl is a simple shell script which should echo
*something* to the shell. Try starting the httpd binary directly (BTW,
look inside apachectl to see how it works), eg:

/path/to/apache/bin/httpd

This *must* echo something...

This error comes from the multi-processing module. As Dick suggests, you
should check the User and Group directives (see
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mpm_common.html#user). Basically,
they have to be set to those of a pre-existing user and group. Most
people create a new user (eg apache or www or something) to handle this.
