http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=apache-httpd-users&m=109210132807661&w=2 describes the same issue with the exception that I am using source from apache.org, and not a package deal.

Information:
Debian 3.1
P4 w/ HT
2.4 kernel with SMP support
gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-8)
sed version 4.1.2
Apache 1.3.33 source from httpd.apache.org

The error it gives during a ./configure is:
Creating Makefile
sed: -e expression #44, char 59: unknown option to `s'
Creating Configuration.apaci in src
Creating Makefile in src
