Negative Look Ahead

I need a rewrite or redirect rule to *.html requests except index.html to index.html.

I have used a blanket negative lookahead before:

RedirectMatch permanent ^/foo/bar/(?!index.html$) http://www.example.com/foo/bar/index.html

But I can’t find how to correctly modify the pattern to limit the redirect to match just *.html
