Same as on any other platform.  Modules are, generally speaking,
platform-neutral (you use APR to deal with platform issues).
Most of us install a regular toolchain from something like
fink, macports, or homebrew.

If you want something more substantial than the developer notes
in the docs, my book aims to help you up the learning curve.
