Is this commercial service using cPanel by any chance?
The per-user error log in cPanel - and likely other control panels - is not always accurate and you may need to check the main server error log.

You haven't posted a specific config so I tested the general idea of what you posted and had no issues.

The error log the commercial service is showing us indicates no errors

An "AuthUserFile" entry was made in .htaccess for the directory
