You need a handler that renders the .doc into HTML. If you simply serve the contents of the .doc files, the browsers will receive the .doc "as is", and recognise the file by its header.

To make sure it doesn't get downloaded, I put into virtual server configuration RemoveType .doc. The file is still being downloaded by both ie 11 and chrome.
What else do I need to do to make sure the document appears in browser?
