mod_rewrite and FollowSymlinks

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hi,
In the documentation [1] I read

To enable the rewrite engine in this context, you need to set
"RewriteEngine On" and "Options FollowSymLinks" must be enabled. If your
administrator has disabled override of FollowSymLinks for a user's
directory, then you cannot use the rewrite engine. This restriction is
required for security reasons.

I wonder what are those security reasons. FollowSymlinks is necessary
even if no symlinks are involved, isnt it? What could happen if
FollowSymlinks where not necessary?
